I’ve been looking for a totem to draw ever since seeing Hockney’s versions in his ‘A bigger Picture’ exhibition in 2012, and then last year I came across this large trunk from a felled tree on the Yearsley Road in 2015. The autumnal light casts a warm golden glow across the trunk as it catches the afternoon sunshine, creating interesting shadows and textures which I’ve tried to capture in this drawing. I returned only this month to hopefully make some more sketches but alas, it had been cut down to the ground, I’m glad I captured it.
