Yorkshire Landscape Artist
My paintings are inspired by the landscapes of North Yorkshire and the surrounding countryside, but they also reflect a wider response to the British landscape and the experience of being out in the land itself.
My work is rooted in a strong attachment to place. I return often to the same lanes, fields, trees and villages, not because I am looking for the obviously picturesque, but because familiarity allows me to see more. Shifting light, changing seasons and subtle differences in colour gradually become part of how I understand a place. Painting these landscapes is less about recording a view and more about responding to somewhere I know - noticing what changes, what remains, and what continues to draw me back.
Much of my work is made in and around the Howardian Hills and the countryside stretching towards the Yorkshire Wolds, including places such as Kilburn, Coxwold, Newburgh, Terrington and Thixendale. These are working agricultural landscapes rather than dramatic viewpoints - lanes, hedgerows, mature trees, arable fields and distant farms. Their character changes markedly through the year, from bare winter trees and low light to spring growth, ripening summer fields and the warmer colours surrounding harvest.
I paint mostly on location outdoors (en plein air), working directly in front of the subject. Some paintings develop later in the studio from these experiences, allowing colour, brushwork and memory to play a greater part while retaining a connection to the particular place.
