Painted en plein air in late October along a quiet farm track near Carlton Husthwaite, North Yorkshire.
I was drawn to the wonderful mix of colours as the trees began their transition into autumn, with golden yellows and warm ochres appearing amongst the remaining greens. The twisting branches and overlapping canopies created an intricate scene, while the rutted track, catching patches of soft autumn light, led the eye through the trees towards the fields beyond.
It was a challenging scene to simplify, with so many interlocking shapes and subtle shifts in colour, but I wanted to capture the character of the trees and the feeling of being beneath their canopy at this particular moment in the changing season.
