Winter Light Towards Kilburn
Winter Light Towards Kilburn

Looking across the fields near Coxwold towards the distant Hambleton Hills and Kilburn White Horse, I was drawn to the winter sunlight catching the ploughed fields, bringing warmth and colour to the landscape.
The deeply furrowed entrance leads the eye into the scene, while the gnarled branches of the bare winter tree stretch across the sky. Beyond, the distant hills appear in soft blues, contrasting with the fresh greens and earthy tones of the foreground.
It was this combination of light, colour and the wonderful character of the old tree that caught my attention and made me want to paint the scene.
