January Trees, Oulston
January Trees, Oulston

Painted en plein air on a cloudy, rain-soaked afternoon in January, this piece began out in the Yorkshire landscape before the weather finally got the better of me. After about an hour the rain set in, and I completed the painting back in the studio, working from memory and reference while holding on to the freshness and spontaneity of those first marks made outdoors.
Winter in Yorkshire has a quiet richness to it. Even with the leaves gone, the hedgerows, bare trees and shifting skies are full of subtle colour, you simply have to slow down and look for it.
