March Bluster captures the restless energy of an early spring day near Carlton Husthwaite, when the landscape is beginning to shift from winter into spring but the weather still carries a raw edge. The sweeping sky, wind-shaped trees and open fields are painted with a combination of palette knife and brush, giving the surface a lively, textured quality.
The use of the palette knife brings a greater physicality to the marks, particularly in the clouds, trees and foreground fields, helping to express the movement of the day rather than simply describe it. Fresh greens, warm ochres and cool blues create a sense of seasonal change, with the track leading the eye into a landscape full of light, weather and motion.
