Painted on location in January, this view along Thornton on the Hill follows the line of the country lane as it moves through the landscape, flanked by bare winter trees.
At this time of year the underlying structure of the land becomes more visible, the branching forms, the edges of fields, and the quiet rhythm of the road itself. Cool blues in the lane and distant ground sit against the warmer burnt sienna of the trees and hedgerows, reflecting the contrast between cold air and low winter light.
